I just returned this afternoon to CT from a week long trip
to Parris Island SC. where I picked up my oldest son who is
a new Marine having just completed 16 weeks of Boot Camp.
They sure know how to grow up a kid up down there. I saw a
GMC pulled over on the side of RT-77 mile 73 or so south
bound on Saturday but I did not stop, felt a bit guilty but
help was already there and the Marine only has 10 days of
liberty so we kept going.
Lessons learned.
1. Even though you can pay $300 each for professionally
rebuilt axle shafts they may not last. I replaced them this
Feburary and Found that there was grease splattered all
over under there on inner and outer joints on both sides on
the way down. I am photographing the mess then removing
them for what I hope will be a full warantee repair. (wish
me luck).
2. The air conditioner on the roof of my unit (Caravan)is
so old that the blower motor does not have ball bearings on
the main shaft but Bushings instead. The bushings when dry
make a horrible screaching and cannot be lubricated except
by motor removal. This is a great thing to discover at 7:00
pm in SC at 92 degrees F.
3. The upper shock mount on the rear bogey on the passenger
side is broken off and has been for who knows how long,
maybe I do not need new shocks .
4. If the spade terminal on the Genset starter gets loose
it will smoke and not start (this was an easy fix, I just
squeezed the terminal and stuck it back on).
5. The Onan Genset will run for 2 years occasional use with
the mixture needle at the bottom of the carb bowl cranked
all the way in if the float level is set too high. Then it
screws up when it is 90 or hotter. I finally took the whole
thing appart and figured it out, it runs better than it
ever has now but probably has burnt valves from running
lean for all these years.
On the positive side the vehicle ran flawlessly for the
2000 mile round trip. I found that the speedometer shows 60
but covers a measured mile in 55 seconds. Now I need to
start catching up on back mail list reading.

Congratulations on the new Marine! You must be proud. I did that when I was
18---best thing I ever did.
