Well, I have returned home with my "new" 1974 GMC and am happy to report it
was a relatively uneventful trip. I would like to thank the folks that
responded to my email where I mentioned I had just purchased this coach and
was driving it from Florida to Maryland. One of the best recommendations
was to contact Jim Bounds at the GMC Co-op in Orlando to arrange a check-out
of critical systems before the long trip.
My wife and I flew to Ft. Lauderdale on Friday morning and finished the
purchase transaction around 1:30pm. We stopped for gas and to air up the
tires then hit the road. We headed for the GMC Co-op in Orlando. I gave
Jim @ the Co-op a call from the cell phone to let him know we were on the
way. We arrived about 4:30 and Jim was ready for us. He had a wheel and
tire that I had asked him to get all ready to go. (The coach had 5 radials
and 1 OLD bias tire) After a look over the critical systems (and finding
the front house battery connected to the engine and the engine battery
connected to the house and this battery only at 1.3 volts!) we were ready to
travel. While at Jim's I purchased his hood hold-open setup which is great.
(I like stainless steel!) Also bought a full set of window felt to replace
the old steel/felt channel. I highly recommend Jim, great service for us!
Friday night we had dinner with friends. Spent the night at one of the
Orlando Wal-Marts. (Great until they vacuumed the parking lot at 3:00am
with a machine that I'm sure was powered by a 747 engine) Saturday we when
to Epcot (without the kids!?) Then hit the road about 3:00pm. Stopped just
south of Savannah, GA and stayed the night at a Ramada there. (It was only
38 degrees Saturday night and I want to pressure test the propane system
before trusting it and the heater!)
Sunday morning we were on the road by 9:30am and uneventfully home (after
picking up our other car at Dulles airport by 9:00pm. Long day!
Again, thanks for the help everyone. I'm sure lots of questions to follow.
Did I mention I would be looking for a set of tires....
