GMCers
A nice way of phrasing it
In the hills of Vermont 4 years ago, my transmission seemed to be
shifting in and out of third gear. These were the pre-GMCnetter
days. Not being sure what to do, we headed home at what I would
consider to be carefully, whatever that means...I guess no roaring
starts and down-shifting up hills, would be close.
Made it back the 1200 miles and started calling around to find
someone experienced with the 425. The best shop in the area
didn't want to do it. Finally I found someone in a single bay
operation about 90 miles from home. His comment when I called
for the first time was, "Yes, I've done a few, but only a half dozen or
so in the last couple of years." BINGO A quick series of calls to
check the guy out found that he was better than I anticipated.
Tranny removed. Clutches replaced, torque converter replaced,
modulator replaced, there was also something called a 'box kit'
(gaskets I think), and valve body pan? that which holds all the ball
bearings, had a hair line crack. When the trans heated up the
body expanded and lost pressure. Then it downshifted. This was
replaced. Tranny re-installed. This was about 20,000 miles ago.
Total cost $1000.
Some time ago I asked what should go into a total rebuild. What
part number for clutches and what torque converter, and exactly
what brand vacuum modulator etc., etc.
People replied that they got 'heavy duty' this and that. No offence
to anyone, but I'd really like to find someone on this net that really
knows transmissions who could fill me in on Specifics and part
numbers. So that next time when I'm not at home, I won't be at the
mercy of Honest Mickey's House of Transmission and Bait Shop
