At the cost of flushing with excess synthetic fluid it would be cheaper
to
put in a drain connection. Any comments?

Bob,
I would think that this would lead to an out of balance condition. I
have a Nova that I drag race occasionally and I had a terrible vibration
problem. The vibration went away when I installed a new trans &
converter. I took the old transmission back to the folks who do my
trannys and supply my converters. I described the problem and they
agreed to send the converter in for inspection and if it was bad, they
would tear down the trans & check for damage. Sure enough! A balance
weight had come off (small one) and that was the source of the
vibration. If that little weight can cause so much vibration, I wonder
what a pipe plug in a tapped hole would do to cause an out of balance
situation.
Arch is a pretty good source of info on syns; Arch, can syns be mixed
with dino fluids? After a change or two you'd think that the dino stuff
would pretty much be gone anyhow.
Just some thoughts.

Hi All,
This may not be timely since I am on the Digest. One method to change all
the Trans fluid when changing to Synthetic is : Change fluid and
filter, refil, loosen the cooling line that goes to the Radiator cooler (you
might want to place a rubber hose over the end to divert to a drain pan),
start the engine. The fluid will be pumped from the Transmission and the
Torque Conv. into the pan. You do this slowly starting and stopping and
adding more fluid as you pump out the old. The amount of fluid you pump into
the pan should be the difference between "refill after change, and refill
after overhaul" as stated in the GMC Manual. My manuals are in my GMC or I
could give the amount. You might waste a quart or two but IMHO much better
than drilling and taping Torque Conv. When complete reconnect, and check
level. This method was used by me for my shop customers when changing to B&M
Trickshift (easier because it was Blue in color). Hope this is clear, sorry
for the longwindedness (sp).
