I've towed with both a Dolly and 4-wheels down. I've found that there
is just too much slop and play in the dolly system; too many
moving pieces. My suggestion is 4-down. Stability is never a
problem and there are no restrictions to your travelling speed.
Oh, if that's a 914-6, they are the only car that can never be towed
under any circumstances! I suggest you immediately sign the title
over to me and I'll be right there to take the useless old thing off
your hands :-)................any chance you believe that?

It seems that all the talk is about toad being hooked up with 4 wheels
down. I plan on using a 'Car Dolly'. It is the 2 wheeled device (190
lbs)that allows you to tow any vehicle. I am going to use it to tow a 1970
Porsche 914 (1985 lbs) for a total dead weight of 2170 lbs with no
additional brakes. Anyone using this setup??

Roger

I have no problems with braking on Monteagle. I also
occasionally tow a Suzuki Sidekick at 2100-2200 lbs.
My tow car offers NO brake assist, just dead weight.

UPHILL
I have a 1978 Eleganza with the original 403. It has
never been rebuilt with 70,000 miles. If I can maintain
60-65 mph I can climb in third gear. Unfortunately I have
only been able to do that once as truck usually slow me down.
Once I fall below 60 I loose momentum and when I get
to 45 I shift to 2nd. I can easily hold 45-50 in 2nd.

We also travel VERY heavy. From either direction we hit
Monteagle with 3/4 fuel, always 3/4 to Full on water & LP,
and we are fully packed. We carry a lot of audio and video
equipment. I have never weight (scarred to) but would assume
we are well over 12,500 in the coach. I run on "E" GoodYear
tires.

If I am towing I have to use 2nd and maintain 45 mph.

DOWNHILL
I use 2nd gear and hold 45 mph using occasional taps
on the brakes. Towing makes very little difference
on the downside. My temps all drop on the downhill
side.

We make the trip 5 or 6 times a year.
