Sept 15th is the last day that gasoline retailers are required by the EPA to sell Summer mix fuel. Why do you care? Well summer mix fuel has a lower
RVP (Reid Vapor Pressure) number. The lower the number the less likely that you will experience Vapor Lock problems. Also there is slightly more
BTU's (energy) per gallon in Summer mix fuel. So in 49 states and some US territories, starting on Thursday morning they can sell anything they
want. This does not apply to the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia and the EPA non-attainment counties across the rest of the US.

There are some strange anomalies in the RVP requirements table. Like why are some areas of Michigan and Kansas the same as El Paso and Phoenix (7.0)


So if you need gas in your GMC or anything else, today or tomorrow are the days to go fill up.

the last days that you have a choice (unless your retailer is already out of
summer blend.

The numbers you saw are on the EPA site are for non-ethanol diluted fuel. Adding ethanol gives them a 1.0 point waiver. So as an example instead of
selling 7.0 in Maricopa County, AZ they are allowed to sell 8.0.

Actually there will be phase in of higher RVP number fuel at the retailers after tomorrow. The distributors are NOT allowed to deliver non-summer mix
fuel to retailers until after Sept 15. (Sept 30 in Maricopa county.) The fine is $25,000 for doing so and is placed directly on the delivery truck
driver, not the distributor. I have never heard of anyone being fined and there may be some cheating especially in the spring.

This is only for on road vehicles, and also does not apply to Marine and aircraft. Aircraft is 7.0 year round.

I watch the list fairly closely. Hall County has no inspection requirement. Should it be included in the metro, it will incur one. At that point,
I'll buy an acre in the hills and 'reside' there for tag purposes. The ratrod toad will nebver pass anyone's smog inspection, although currently over
25 years is exempt. It will get by on that.
