Well, it looks like I will be increasing the
pressure of my Goodyear G159 Load Range
E tires to 75 lbs.

I just got the June 1999 issue of GMC Motorhome
News and saw the response that Wes Caughlan
made to Tom Warner's letter about tires.

Interesting reading that got my attention.

does the article make sense to you after reading it? Why are you going to 75
PSI?

Tom,
I thought the article made sense.

I read it first as "keep in mind that Load Range E
tires have to be inflated to Load Range E inflation
pressures, otherwise their 2,680 pounds of load-carrying
capacity is lost. Load Range E tires have a minimum
inflation pressure requirement of 75 or 80 psi cold
depending on the manufacturer"?

I went out and looked at my Goodyear G159 sidewall
and it does say "max rating of 2680 at 80 psi."

I thought that 75psi (since I've been running at 65psi for
the past year) was high enough, but now on the other hand.

After reading the article again and the tire sidewall I think
that Wes means that we should move up to 80 psi if the side
wall for the tire states that to get the max rating of 2680 lbs.

I am now under the impression that 80 psi would be the
minimum standard pressure now for my tire and GMC.

Or did I miss something here?

Richard you got the message that many others don't want to understand for
some reason that is lost to me. If you want to forget about tire problems,
buy E rated all steel tires, set them to 80 pounds and forget them. Seems
simple to me.

Tom...

Going from 65 to 80 is safer, the only problem is going to be...
Richard's perception that the ride is now harsh. His wife will not feel
that way, unless he tells her the background. I've tested myself and
yes, I am just like the participants in the blind test GM did. If I think
there is 80 pounds of pressure in those tires, the ride becomes harsh.
Especially if I am the one that pumps in 80 pounds of pressure, and the
road is a Blue road.

Knowing that the reverse is also true... that people who were told
falsely that there was only 65 in the tires, reported softer rides... is
going to help me get used to this.

Regards,
John
