Tire Monitoring System

has a dealer in Ohio selling the kit for that price that we could order

Seems like an awful lot of money for something that is so easy to check once
a day or so.

While researching another project - I ran across this very interesting
device from --> www.smartire.com

This system monitors pressure and temperature -- from INSIDE each of the
tires on a vehicle.

The xmitter in mounted around the inside circumference of the wheel rim and
consist of the following:
. Pressure and temperature Transducer.
. centrifugal switch (activates the unit - saves battery)
. radio xmitter (433 mhz)
. lithium battery (avg life --7 years)

The dash mounted display unit:
. Programmable for alarms and alerts
. Displays REQUIRED PRESSURE / ACTUAL PRESSURE /PRESSURE STATUS / TEMP
for each tire

These units are available at Sears and Discount Tires for about $500 for a 6
wheel RV system.

BUT - I understand that if enough of us in the GMC community are interested
that the price could be less the $250 -- if there are sufficient orders.

Oh - I have no vested interest in this company -- I'm just interested in
there device --

If this unit works in a round robin mode where it just scans for unique
sensor ID's, it could be perfect for measuring all 10 wheels including a
toad, and two additional inner front wheels (which are really always zero
pressure (which from their web page you program the alert and warning
levels yourself) and some noninal temperature set to be reliably below
wheel bearing failure temperature as measured (where? anyone got any
ideas for a place that will show temperature rise before the CV boot
burns up )

I'm betting that the first 'tire separation sound' Patrick's Dad heard
was accompanied by some exothermal energy from the bearings. That sound
occured again 250 miles and many days later, with a lot of heat being
generated. What a father's day present! If he was not close to home and
had not taken it easy for the remainder of the return home, might the
failure that occured 250 miles later, occured many miles sooner because
of the heat build up?

I offer that as a hypothesis, for anyone to knock down.

Got an email and some brochures on the Smartire system from the dealer in
Akron OH that Paul gave us. The price for a 6 wheel system is $250 and
a 4 wheel system, as on the Impala SS net is $190. I asked about the
cost and feasability of adding additional sensors, but did not get an
answer. That probably needs to be answered by the factory, which I
understand Heinz has a query in to.

I also asked if they had temp-only sensors without the motion sensing
switch. No answer. The size of the sensor is 4.5 inches x 1.25 inches x
0.75 inches, and it is strapped around the center of the wheel and held
in place by what looks like a large hose clamp type device. It weighs
2.1 oz and has a 2.1 oz weight at the 180deg point around the
circumference of the wheel to maintain balance. This is definately not
mounted on the rim, and Paul is right, it does make a difference to your
understanding of how this is mounted. (Paul always says it is a wheel not
a rim)

One thing I just noticed, is that the temp sensor is desiged to measure
the air temperature inside the tire, not the temperature of the wheel it
is strapped to. It operates on 433 MHZ, and will operate in 100%
humidity.
