I may need to get some tire chains for the GMC. I'm wondering what are
the merits of chains versus steel cable on this front wheel drive? Any
opinions as to which will work better, be less hard on the side walls of
radials, etc. etc. I like to hear a few opinions and experiences of
those who have used either or both. Thanks in advance.

I carry a set of cable chains to be legal at certain times of the year.

I actually used them a few times. Makes for a rough ride, but enables you to
keep on going.

If you're actually planning to use them... put them on early. If you can
keep the rig moving it handles ice and snow very well but onece stopped...
give up and chain up.
