Duane if it were only that simple. It is doubtful that the distributer could
give to much advance if the timing was set to begin with. You are much more
likely to burn a hole in your piston with an improperly tuned carb.
Due the bad gas we are subjected to today, every one that has a GMC should
have a spark knock sensor(detects even the slightest pre-detonation) such as
the MSD #8964 and an adjustable timing control MSD # 8782(allows you to
change the timing to eliminate pre-detonation. Its an almost mandatory
combination if you are towing.
To properly set the distributer one needs to know what modifications have
been done to the engine, cam, piston compression, porting, and fuel mixture.
Today a lot of mechanics set the timing by ear, adjusting it a little at a
time until all traces of pre-detonation at part and full throttle under load
are eliminated.
If you want than by all means have the distributer curved on the bench, but
you will still have to tweak it on the coach.
