Yes there is room for a double DIN head unit.
I am using an old iPhone here. It does everything except make phone calls since there is no SIM card in it. Better than having it sit in a drawer gathering dust. My current iPhone can also be used if I want to make phone calls through the system.
I like having more than one GPS going. The Garmin is at eye level and easy to follow. Carplay map (Waze and Google maps) is a little harder to follow.
I like having the backup camera work as a rear view mirror.
