The heartbreak of BDS

I have been hearing all the health problems that netters have been
experiencing such as kidney stones and arthritis and feeling their
pain. I have been struggling with something not quite as serious but
aggrevating just the same. I am comfortable enough with my new friends
on the GMC-net to finally share it, hoping that some of you can help me
find some answers. I am speaking about the heartbreak of BDS (Bouncing
Dash Syndrome).

If any can recall the I-94 incident, I drove most of the way back from
Michigan, holding the dash which was bouncing around the cockpit.
Lights going on and off, a windshield washer unit spraying continuously
until disconnected and a windshield wiper possesed by the devil himself.
What were they thinking when they made this dash? The support is like
using Phyllis Diller's bra on Dolly Parton

In disassembling my dash, I have been unable to find any serious
structural support. The plastic stays are all broken, the plastic piece
that the actual dash screws into is thin plastic junk, also broken in
two places. The area around the glove compartment is supported top and
bottom but sags and bounces.

1- Are these parts available without using the dowry set aside for my
eldest daughter?
2- Would brackets inside the dash on either side of the glovebox holding
up the top help?
3- Will my concept of attaching an aluminum channel behind the thin
plastic behind the dash help?
4- How do I support the dash in replacing the stays and if I do, what
the heck do I attach them to?
5- Is it tough to install a DIN stereo in place of the 8-track?
6- Does anyone make a nice, not too expensive dashboard insert that I
can use the existing guages until I win my second lottery? I have made
some nice ones myself for my FIAT, my Austin Healey and my TR-6 out of
plywood and choice veneer but have a lot of other things to work on.

The Mar-Hyde suggested by Paul Bartz and others has worked well in
recolloring the dash and side panels. I am really happy with the color
and finish. I continue to be amazed at the wealth of information and
your generosity in sharing it.
