The GMCnet Import Project

  • Thanks to a generous contribution from Rick Denney, 120,000 posts from 2004-2008 have been imported into the GMCnet Archive! With this latest addition, a virtually complete history of GMCnet is available online for the first time in an easily accessible, searchable format!
Christo, we haven’t met but I hope to. I’m at a work rally in Baltimore this weekend and discovered I had missed out on the actual new GMC forum after the demise of the mail list. Jared Kohl enlightened me.

I want to thank you and everyone involved with preserving the list archive. It’s more than a resource—it’s an homage to the great minds of GMCnet that are one of the main reasons the GMC family continues to endure.

I gather the algorithm created an account for each unique email address in the list digests. Many of us who contributed over the years used several email addresses as circumstances changed, including me. Any way to combine those? I posted for some years using rwd@iteris.com (no longer active) and rwdenney as the user name for a gmail account (obscured because it’s still active, sorta). That’s in addition to the one on the account I have reactivated this weekend.

Thanks again and I look forward to poking in from time to time.

I found rwdenney and merged it with rdenney. There's nothing here from rwd@iteris.com. Can you point out any posts from that email, either here or on the old forum?

Maybe that's the answer -- there's a gap in the archive from 2004-2008.
That’s probably it—my firsts posts were in late 2003.

Did you meet all your costs for the conversion? I feel derelict for not having contributed.

Rick “might actually have a copy of the archive from that period if your interested” Denney

Yes, the community came through in a big way. If you have the digests from the missing period, that would be amazing. Let's start a PM thread to discuss further!

I'm sending you a PM. I have all the emails from the list from November 2003 to 2010 or so. At that time, I switched to the gmall address and was using gmail's browser interface to look at messages. What I have covers the period when I used an email client with the rwd@iteris address and the address I'm using now. A change in employment in 2010 made it difficult to look at personal email, so I switched to Gmail. It was around 2006 when I stopped using the Iteris address.

Gotta correct myself. The archive I'm putting together for Christo starts on June 9, 2004, with just a few messages before that date. Somehow I lost or didn't save the emails from November 2003 when I joined the email list to June of 2004. But I'm sending him emails from that date in 2004 to 2010 or so--about 185,000 emails from GMCnet. I expect it will add well over 100,000 emails to what's in the archive now.

Okay folks, I have merged the 6/9/2004 - 8/14/2008 content provided by Rick Denney into the GMCnet Archive (pages 1871-2779 in that forum section). This added about 18.1k threads and 120k messages! Never before has such a complete archive of GMCnet been available online. There is still a small gap from 9/30/2003 - 6/9/2004 but I'm not complaining!

Many thanks to Rick "The Packrat" Denney and to Driven 2 Services for their help with the project.

Awesome!

Interestingly, my user summary still shows a join date of 12/29/2005, but now I can find my posts going back to June 10, 2004.

There are lot of other old GMCers represented in those posts, and reading back through that stuff from nearly 20 years ago really brings back some memories.

Thank you, Christo, for preserving this GMC heritage.

I think a re-indexing is needed in order to resolve a couple of minor issues. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for donating those archives, Rick. You're as bad as I am!

Rick, thanks so much for filling in a huge piece of the GMCnet migration puzzle! I've spoken with a few of the old old timers, e-mail list only service, and generally they were feeling despondent that their forum contributions, and connection to the GMC community, were lost. I'll be making some phone calls with the news that should cheer them up quite a bit! Thanks again.

You too, Christo - thanks!!
