Ken,

I just checked one of those german dash bulb/socket combinations, it
measures 9.5mm = .374" across the
base of the socket. It has two tabs sticking out ( 10.5mm
= .413" across the tabs).
It is rated at 1.2W, ther is also a .9W and I think a 1.6W
available, but the 1.2s are the most common ones.
The Osram part number is 2721MF8 ( I'll double check that at the shop
today).
The other bulb I have is a 2721MF, slightly different configuration with a
8.35mm = .33" diameter at the base and 2 metal mounting/contact tabs at
11mm = .433". This one looks like it would fit a slightly thicker
housing/circuit board. It's also a 1.2W.
I'll be out of town for a few days, so I don't have time to check this out
myself right now. If somebody has his telltale panel out, I'll mail the
bulbs to you and you can see if they work

Ken,

they are used in mid-eighties Mercedes, VWs, BMTroubleU-s, and Audis,
sometimes different types in one dashboard. If you can't find them at your
parts store, try a repair shop that works on european cars.
