Like Eric Stewart, my fellow Virginian, I am just beginning the GMC
evaluation process. I think I want one, but I'm trying to keep my
objectivity. I am interested in the wiggle waggle Eric described. Is this
an inherent characteristic of these coaches due to design, or a sign of age
and worn parts? The existance of the sway bars seems to indicate the
symptom is common, but doesn't necessarily prove it's a design deficiency.
What has been the experience of those of you who are original owners or
owners of next-to-new coaches? I'd be interested in hearing from any owners
directly if this is a topic that's not worthy of discussion on the
mailinglist.

Thanks for your time,

My coach does not experience the "wiggle-waggle" effect described here. It is a
1976 26'. Maybe it is because I only have 17,000 mi. on it. Not too sure on
that one. It was poorly maintained, but the drive home on picking it up was
very enjoyable. 700 mi. days in terrific cross winds across Wyoming. Although
the restoration is costing more than anticipated I believe that this was the
best purchase. Engineering does go a long way.
In a group such as this, it is my experience that horror stories are common.
This is good for the rest of us. It gives us the opportunity to possibly avoid
their problems by being aware of it beforehand. Any lurkers that are
contemplating purchase, stay tuned. I am sure if you do decide to take the
plunge you will not be disappointed. Darren

Brad, I have owned my '73 GMC for the last ten years and have been across
the U.S., Canada and to Alaska and back and have never experienced wiggle
waggle. Prevenative maintenance is the key. I have Alex Sirum put my coach
up on jack stands at least once and some times twice a year and check every
thing. If any item looks worn, we replace it. As Jim Bounds preaches, if
your steering components are in good shape and the six wheels are aligned
properly, you will not suffer from wiggle waggle.
