Since a portable radio picks up the noise the possibility exists that the
statpower is radiating (transmitting) RF (radio frequency) & the noise is being
picked up by the AM antenna & not coming through on the power line. However, it
could be that the noise is getting into the power line & the power line is
acting as a transmitting antenna. In which case the AC powered radios could be
receiving this noise via their antennas, not necessarily coming in via the radio
power supply. If this were the case, check the ground at the statpower & the
outlet where the shore line is plugged in. If the grounds are good, an in-line
RF filter installed at the outlet where the statpower plugs in might prove
effective.
To determine if the power lines are acting as an antenna, walk around w/the
portable AM radio & pass it along the wires using the radio as an RF noise
detector. Try orienting the radio to different angles for the best sensitivity.
As a side note, the noise would not be noticed on an FM radio due to the
"limiting" action of FM. Noise is amplitude modulated (AM). The "limiting"
action of FM (frequency modulated) chops off noise pulses. Also, as a point of
curiosity, for a second AM station to overpower another AM station operating on
the same frequency, the received signal must be 100 times as strong as the first
AM station. For a second FM station to overpower another FM station, it need be
only twice the signal strength.
As I've mentioned in previous posts, noise can be very difficult to diagnose
&/or eliminate.
