I'm a relatively new owner of a '75 Avion GMC and I've a lot to learn
about all areas of this fine coach. My lurking on this mailing list has
helped me a great deal. I've used what I learned about the air
suspension system to minimize air loss by isolating areas and using gas
leak detector fluid. Now I'd like to reduce the wandering steering as
much as I can. It doesn't wander too much but I'd like to be able to
steer with one finger. Is that too much to ask? I had the front end
rebuilt when I bought the coach; ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm,
steering relay lever, etc. I've adjusted the steering gear box using
info found on this mailing list. Now I think I should replace the lower
steering shaft (GM part # 692860) or rebuild the universal joint
assembly with the GM journal kit # 703325. The quoted part numbers came
from the 78Z Parts Book. I haven't contacted GM Service Parts yet so I
don't know if the parts are still available. Does anybody on this list
know if other suppliers like Moog have the mentioned items and what
their part numbers are? Also can this work be done by a semi mechanical
geezer? I'll take all the help I can get. Thanx,

Skip,
Yes, replacing the lower shaft is not rocket science so if you've got a
selection of wrenches and some PB blaster- you can do the job. You might
want to call Alex Serun (1-941-763-1121), I'm sure he can hook you up with
the part. If you prefer, give me a call tomorrow on my toll free # and
I'll give you the part # to see if you can snag one locally. (1-877-275-4462)

Hope this helps,
