> Whats the difference in Pontiac 455 and olds??

Arch, there's hardly and similarity in the two. They aren't even cousins
internally. They're both GM, of course, and they do share a common bell
housing bolt pattern. But that's about it. I've had both and enjoyed both.
The olds has really huge bearing journals which is good for the seriously
heavy (compared to a passenger car) load that it has to carry in the
motorhome. That was also one of the main reasons GM used it as the basis of
the diesel experiment of the late 70's and early 80's. The high static
compression ratios and detonation that occur in a diesel are very hard on
bearings.

Back in the muscle car days--late 60's and very early 70's-- both were
offered in some pretty neat high performance versions. The W-30 olds and the
RamAir Pontiacs did pretty well in the company of the SS454 Chevelles and
GS455 Buicks. No similarity between the Buick 455 and either of the other
two, by the way, except again for the bell housing mounting pattern.
Cadillac used the same pattern too, I'm sure to make transmission cases
universal, but that doesn't explain why Chevrolet's pattern was never the
same as the others. Beats me.
