How do you like the dish? I have installed a few in houses and use them at
home. How easy is it to adjust and do you have trouble camping under
trees??? For $250 just for the unit w/o a box I want to be sure it works
well once camped. My kids would have withdrawls w/o it even though I tell
them thats what we're trying to get away from!!!

Nate,

I got the Winegard RV Digital Satellite System with RS-1000 Antenna, Model
RD-4610.
The RS-1000 is an active Local TV antenna in a circular dish housing - looks
like a little flying saucer attached to the top of the mast. Price was
$242.10 from Camping World with a coupon. The coupon was for a free receiver
with a purchase of a one-year Top 50 (later converted to Top 100 for no
additional charge) DISH subscription for $300. Cheaper than cable monthly
charges. I didn't get any premium channels.

There are two roof penetrations, one for the mast and the other for the
cables. Good installation instructions. You need to locate the dish so when
it's down, it clears vents, storage boxes and AC units. Diagram in
instruction shows an area 19.50" wide and 46 3/4" long is needed. 10"
minimum from roof edge.

The package works fine. You enter your current location ZIP into a menu on
the TV to get the azimuth and elevation needed to point the dish. A compass
will be handy. : ) There is a problem with trees. Try to get a site with a
shot to the South clear of trees. I've had to do some shifting at
campgrounds. I really like having the Weather channel immediately available
when I'm travelling. The Local TV antenna works well bringing in stations. I
was parked at the Atlanta Airport waiting for my son to come in and was able
to get all of the local channels very well. Works well in the Washington DC
area sitting in my driveway also.

Make sure you get one of those Antenna Up Warning cards. I clip mine to the
driver's visor when I crank up the antenna.

I've got my fingers crossed on Congress changing the local TV restrictions.

I've absolutely no reservations about recommending the package. I have been
very satisfied with it. Your kids will love it. : )

Word of warning!! According to my Sales Rep at DIRECTV, they cannot
provide service to a 'mobile installation' as would be the case in out
beloved GMCs. This was explained to me as a recent court ruling due to
local broadcasters filing suit to halt the encroachment from the satellite
TV providers. Thats what I know.

I believe you mean local station programming? That isn't anything new.
Haven't heard lately where Congress is on this issue. Supposedly they were
to craft either a new bill or revise/renew an existing one addressing local
station programming provisions? This was supposed to be done last fall,
however, due to incumbent politician concerns over offending constituents,
they postponed the decision. The Good Sam club magazine, among others, had
a lengthy article in I believe the Feb 99 issue on this problem.

There are some dish's which have either an encircling or top mounted antenna
to pick up local stations though. Braund is one brand I'm familiar with. I
understand that they are slightly less effective though, than the original
coach antenna?

I think what they are not providing is ABC, CBS and NBC, if I am not
mistaken. Unless you can prove you can't recve regular broadcast signals.

Thom et al...
Do you think it is the local broadcasters or the local cable companies
filing that particular suit, Re: mobile or portable service?

Direct TV was just enjoined from providing distant network feeds to local
customers via satellite; and that was the local broadcasters suing
because satellites were bypassing local ads and transmitting a feed, for
example with NYC ABC ads, to satellite receivers in Georgia, bypassing
the local Atlanta ABC station and its ads. That suit affected mostly
fixed satellite customers.

I think, in practical terms, the mobile issue really comes down to the
phone connection issue. Some satellite companies are very picking about
the phone line being connected all the time, and others are not. It is
almost getting to be don't ask... we (the satellite companies) don't want
to know what you are doing (at least with my company).

I just noticed that my receiver calculates an encoded Location ID: and it
is different every time you ask for it. Anyone know about this? It is
possible I guess, for them to be doing a (GPS and time of day calc)
within my receiver?? Those GPS chips are getting dirt cheap.

I just recently subscribed to the Dish Network.
I specifically asked about my motorhome (GMC) and
requirements -

Dish Network answer:

1. Get extra dish antenna and mount on coach.
2. Move your sat. box from home to coach and connect.
3. When you return home reverse process.

Connection to phone is ONLY required when getting
a pay-per-view movie or for service trouble shooting.

My GMC/2nd home box has not been connected to phone
since I signed up several weeks ago - all works fine.

I elected to get a second sat. box for coach - I can
also use that second box at home so we can watch more
than one program at a time. A folding dish for motorhome
is avail at Camping Worls for about $200.00

Dish offered the big system (box and dish) for free
with a one year commitment to a 48/mo package. Got
a $299 rebate to cover the equipment. Plus offered
a $99 install.

All seems to work fine. We do have to get our local
stations via antenna thanks to our "@#$(@@" politicians.
Don't you just love being "protected"??? I sure wouldn't
want to miss a single commercial!! :)

Picture is far better than our old cable and we got to
tell our local cable company where to go - instead of
the other way around. We got 60 TV channels plus 14
premium channels for the $48/mo.

No, it goes further than that. They cannot provide any service to anyone
in Montana (for example) due to a local blackout rules. This includes ALL
of the channels, not just broadcast.

John, thanks for the reply! I have the local antenna "flying saucer" one on
my '75 GB. Thought about doing away with it and using the Satellite one
instead. Glad your's is working well.
