Would anyone have tips or advice for a route from Houston to the Elkhart IN area?
My biggest concern is the I-80/294 toll roads near Chicago. I've heard the charges can be equal to a tank of gas!
Or recommendations for must see drives/places along these routes.
Thanks, Scott.

Unless you NEED to get near Chicago, one option is to take I-70 to Indianapolis. Then take US-31 (not an interstate , but at least some of it is
4-lane) North up to Elkhart area.

Thanks Paul,
That was my 2nd option, now becoming my first. It might cost me a few extra minutes, but well worth avoiding the Chicago area and toll roads.

Hi Scott:
I agree w/ Paul and the route he suggested.
Good advise.
Thanks again for your help Sun. Got distributor rebuilt and GMC running late Mon. afternoon. Drove from Kingsland, Tx. to Peoria, ILL. on the same path as a storm blowing and drenching the same path. Arrived totally bushed, but are home safe and sound.
Thanks again,

Mike,
I wish I could of been more help...glad you made it home safely.
Hind sight is better than 20/20. I have a perfectly good used distributor at home.

In Illinois I-80 eastbound to I-94 in Indiana. When I-94 and I-80 split east of Gary, IN, stay on I-94. Take I-94 east to 2nd Michigan City exit
(US -20). Take US-20 to Elkhart. There will be only one toll. It will be in Illinois at junction of I-80 and I-294. It is around around $2.30 for
a 3 axel GMC.

I plugged the origination and destinations into mapquest and got distance and time. Then I changed the options to "avoid toll roads" and got the same
distance, but 13 minutes longer time.

When you consider how long it takes to slow down, stop, putz with paying the attendant, possibly getting change back, getting back up to speed, you
have lost more than 5 minutes. If there is a line, even longer.

So the difference is less than 7 minutes to keep from giving the toll mafia some of your favorite dollars. If everyone was a cheapskate like me, toll
roads would cease to exist in a year or two.

I have driven on your non toll roads, through residential streets, past
school zones and manufacturing centers and strip malls, stop lights,
round-a-bouts, etc. I personally do not mind the toll roads. My choice.

You have WAY more disposable income than I do. So I use the secondary roads that are made for traffic. I don't blindly follow the route that mapquest
or a GPS produces. I look at a map and see how many burgs it traverses and if it is a state route or a US route or whatever.

The routes that mapquest spit out for Scott are both all interstate with or without tolls. The one without tolls takes 13 minutes longer.

Shrug.

All my income is disposable. It is all monopoly money. This is America, I
spent 9 years in military service to it and it's flag, and the principles
for which it stands. Also for my and your freedoms to make individual
choices about where I travel, with whom and why. I defend your rights to
choose wherever you travel as much as I defend mine. Toll roads or not.
Your choice. My choice. Same deal.

I envy you. I have to buy groceries and pay utilities and taxes and insurance and what-not. There isn't enough left over for much luxury. Like gas for
the GMC.

I'm working on transferring ownership to someone that will enjoy it.

That's what I meant by disposable. It always takes all of it, so it must
be. My saving days are behind me more than ahead of me.

On the route that I gave him, most of it was Interstate highway (I-80 and I-94) The rest is federal highway (US20) and all is 4 lane. Most of it is
limited access 4 lane. US 20 is the main bypass around SBN and Elkhart. The speed limit is 70. There are no stoplights and no slowdown around SBN
and all the way to Elkhart. If you were to take the I-70 to indy route you would still end up on the same US 20 limited access segment in North
Central Indiana

Also the route will NOT put you in the city of Chicago. I-80 runs south of the city limits by at lest 6 miles at it's closest point.

These are the routes I would use and have used for the last 45 to 50 years. As I said before there is one toll of approximately $2.30 for a 3 axel
vehicle.
