Larry,
I have read on the Olds email list (might even be in their faq) that the
stock oiling system is good to about 5000 rpm. We rev limit ours to 4000
to be safe. I would doubt that most GMCers even get that high as the motor
sounds like it is really spinning even at only 4000.
We do hit our limiter occasionally. Going from memory, I think 1st at 4000
is about 40-45 MPH and 2nd at 4000 is about 65-70 MPH. We do hit the
limiter in both gears occasionally when we are holding our shift button
down to keep it in a lower gear going up a hill and forget to keep an eye
on the tach.
Not towing, I don't think the motor would need to get to the 4000, so I
would suspect that even a 3500 rpm limit would be acceptable on most GMCs.
Since it sounds like yours is only a shift light, and not a hard
rev-limiter, I would suggest that a number around 3000-3500 is probably
good since you could always exceed it if you wanted to. Our 4000 limit is
an actual limiter which keeps the engine from revving itself any higher.
The 455 can actually be made to rev much higher. Mondello's oil
modifications (restricters/high volume pump/other mods), apparently make
his street 455s reliable to ~6500 rpm (again number from memory so it might
be +/-). I'm sure his race engines even go much higher than that.
