Patrick,
Appreciated your step-by-step instructions on driveshaft and CV joint
rebuild. I'm curious whether you used the Redline CV-2 to pack your
wheel bearings also.On inspection of the spider, I noticed that the two
open faces are different. one side is flat while the other side has a
raised ridge. I didn't notice on removal which end goes toward the
housing. The picture is not clear in either the maintence manual or the
parts book.

Ray,

I did use CV-2 on the wheel bearings also, but when I did mine there was
some confusion(at least in my mind) whether Mobil1 approved the use of their
synthetic grease in wheel bearing applications. After I laid in what's
turned out to be a one year supply of CV-2, I spoke with the Tech folks at
Mobil and confirmed that their synthetic grease is up to the task. The
Mobil1 is about half the price of CV-2 and much easier to find. Whenever my
stock of CV-2 runs out, I'll switch to Mobil1.

Regarding the axle spider, I don't recall any difference in orientation of
the spider and I'm sure if it mattered it would be called out in the
maintenance manual. The raised ridge may just be a forging mark. IIRC, the
spiders out of my axles were perfectly symmetric from one side to the other.

HTH,
Patrick
