Rear suspension recall on '73 & '74 coaches

After reading about the recall on the rear suspension a few days ago, I
contacted Cinnabar and they told me to call their CA technical info number
(can't find it right now!) which I did. Spoke with Wes Caughlin (?) and he told
me that the pins were not ever recalled, only the rear brakes. That included
drums, backing plates and axle spindles.

After I gave him my '74 Glaciere's VIN number, he told me it was listed as
having had the work done someplace and sometime in the past. However, he also
said that it was possible the work wasn't really done so I need to check a few
things to make certain that it was completed. I'll put that info on the list
over the weekend in case others might want to check as well.

So much for having the entire rear suspension overhauled at GM's expense!

I went back and checked my material and Wes appears to be right about part
of it, although I recall that I read somewhere that the rear bogies were
being replaced as a complete unit. I disagree with Wes that just because he
has it listed on your coach as complete it was done. Read the information
from the article and you will see that there were some dealers that reported
the work done when it was not! You have to check your coach to find out if
the recall was actually done.

The recall is GMC dealer Product Campaign 74-C-07 and it affects all 1973
and 1974 models manufactured prior to may 1, 1974. The recall campaign is
in the X-0021 service Bulletins for those who are not familiar with it. The
parts to be replaced include (my emphasis) EVERYTHING FROM THE CONTROL ARM
OUT ON ALL FOUR REAR AXEL POSITIONS. (I assumed that this included the pins
and bushings since the old control arms will not fit the new pins) In some
cases dealers reported servicing the motohomes and didn't do the work.

How do you tell if your coach has been recalled and modified: measure the
axel spindle where it comes thru the backing plate. If it measures 1.866"
it has not been modified. If it measures 2.256" it has.

The new parts include new axel spindles, new backing plates, all lnew rear
brakes, new rear hubs adn new brake drums. The new rear hubs have the
longer stud bolts required for Alcoa wheels and they have shiny new hubcaps.

only dealer doing the recall.

Hope this clarifies the issue somewhat.
