Problem putting more than 25 gal into gas tank

OK Pete,
Glad the brakes are done.
If you have the OE black tank, only a Thetford valve will screw right on and they know they have you.....

Now, my big question:
When you are fueling and gas runs out, where does it run out?
There are lots of choices, but some are straight forward fixes.

I had a similar problem with running out of the rear (main) tank. Turns out that the vent on the top the tank had come loose from the solder job. Since gas running down the filler goes first to the rear tank, at 25 or so gallons it would be full and spirt out the vent. With the back pressure, then the front would continue to fill. I dropped the tank, discovered the bad vent, and took it to a radiator shop where they cleaned the tank and soldered it back in place. I pressure tested the tank and fixed a couple of soap bubble leaks. Reinstalled and leak issue is gone. While the tanks are down, plug all vents and seal the tank. Then blow in one of the fuel inlets pressurizing the tank. Spray around all fixtures and all possible openings to the tank. Locate bubbles and fix the leaks. Do it once, the first time, making it your last. JWID

OH, and BTW, in order to take the rear tank down, front tank has to come down first. As long as that front tank is down, bubble test it also, especially the soldered vent on that tank. JWID

Pete,
The early coaches have a stub on the left side that is usually capped with a plugged piece of rubber fuel line. Nobody knows why this is there, but I can promise you that the rubber hose is shot. As said though, take the tanks down and do it all now. If you send me an @ddress, I will return with two good write ups (I know because I wrote them as a result of five fuel tank removals) about how to get the tanks down and back up with a minimum of drama and a mod that you should make while you are there.
Just so you know, I can fuel our coach on the fast hook and a fuel stop can be less than 10 minutes.

Matt, yes I have a Tethford #01447, it is glued to the tank, I’ll try to attempt to send pictures Yay! I’m not sure which valve to get that has the plastic part that is glued to the tank.

As for the fuel question, I’ve only tried to put more than 25 gals in twice. Both times I needed to leave quickly, attendant was getting mad. So I only glance under. So once I get my rig back on the ground, I’ll fill it up and watch. But I think it was coming from between the tanks closer to the passager side.

Pete,
A great set of pictures. If I understand what has happened, then I am sure I don't know how to advise you to correct it. It looks like both the valve and the tank flange have been hopelessly (fill in the label of choice for repaired to be useless). The valve is a lost cause and you don't want that valve anyway. I can't imagine how the flange can be saved with the tank in place. Taking the tank down is just another essential PITA. I have to think about it to come up with a workable plan.

I’ve removed the flange, it couldn’t be saved anyways. Is there a possibility of getting another flange? Or am I looking at a new tank?

Pete,
From your pictures, that was pretty obvious.
The tank is a poly-whatsit that does not like to be glued. You might be able to get a replacement flange from, Thetford, Cinnabar or JimK. Start with JimK as he smart enough that he might have one for a Valterra valve. That way you can forget the expensive Thetford valve forever.

Oh Pete,
I am at the stage where I am here so I can help others. That is the way this community works. In all to few years, it will be you providing the benefit of your experience to others.
JimK used to be at "Applied GMC" but he seems to have dropped that domain.

Yes I get fuel peeing out if I try to put more than 25 gal. What’s that problem?
Thank you
I think that your seals into your tanks where the lines go in may need to be replaced. You are most likely leaking out of the TOP of one of the tanks at the vent where it connects to the tank. I had the same issue until I took it to DJ in Sheridan, OR. This is often overlooked because everyone is thinking their fuel lines are leaking and they never replace it.

Here is a great video on how your tanks work.

Pete,
I did not have a street address until now. I do send these two out often, but as *.PDF and as an e-mail attachment. I believed I had added both of my publications in this area to the "resources" page here, but I guess I have not done that yet. If you contact me at <matt 7323 tze at gmail dot com>, I will attach the two articles and reply. This comes with a small caution, I am running very slowly these last few days.
