Has anyone found a particularly good value in a replacement starter for a 455? I want to keep mine and rebuild it as a traveling spare.

I would get a quality rebuild and put it back in the coach. If you really want to carry a spare I would carry a mass rebuilt one as a spare
(AutoZone, etc.

Run your best parts. Keep your engine tuned, and fuel tanks full, run an
electric fuel pump, prime your carb or run efi, and you won't kill starters
frequently. Just sayin.

Randy,
It seems like most buy a quality starter, with a lifetime warranty, from one of the big brand stores. Like autozone, orileys, etc..
That way, if your on the road and your starter goes out, go to your nearest big brand store that you originally bought from, and exchange for a new
rebuilt one.

Scott, those starters are unique to motor homes and Olds toronado. Lots of
parts houses don't stock them. Lots of coach owners carry a space to avoid
down time on the road. The quality of rebuilt ones is a big issue. High
quality ones using American parts are even scarcer. I have a local
rebuilder that I use. I send him 6 at a time, 3 regular and 3 high torque
for the guys that hot rod their coaches. Not cheap, but very few problems.

Jim,
I guess that could be, depending where in the country one might break down.
But I've never had a problem finding them in Texas, or Mississippi.. But who knows what the future holds.......Obama did buy back a lot of cars from
that era. So supply might follow...

I bought the Remy starter from rock auto.
The deco version has a higher kW rating 1.5 vs 1.2.
So looks like the deco is better ans a little cheaper also.
Advanced auto has it for $40.. After the core.
