I spoke with a local brake remanufacturer in Atlanta today. They
rebuild the powermaster assemblies. According to the guy I spoke with,
there are two powermasters, Powermaster 2 was used on the 85-86(?) cars
and Powermaster 3 was used on the 88-89 cars. Functionally, he said
there's no difference, but the parts are not interchangeable. They sell
reman'd P2's for $371 and quoted me a price of $1300 for a P3.
The pump and accumulator assembly alone for the P3 is $675.

When shopping for one of these, I'd stick with the Powermaster 2. If
anyone's interested, the shop is Brake Specialty Company, 404-659-8722.
I called them because the guy at NAPA said that, if I ordered it from
him, he'd just buy it from Brake Specialty and mark it up to me.

Sorry Thomas, I must have missed it the first time. Is it a stocked
item or special order. My recent experiences with PEPboys(especially
the special order department) have been less than satisfactory.

Another lesson the hard way: many of the alternative boosters are larger in
diameter than the original. Not a particular problem since there is enough
room to do the installation. However, you'll want to check the clearance on
the A/C-heat mixer door cable that runs between the blower housing and the
booster. My cable bracket broke due to additional stress caused by the cable
and booster interfering. A newly manufactured clamp to hold the cable and
repositioning it on the housing did the trick.

Did someone publish a source for the bracket that I understand is required
for the Powermaster conversion?? Are there different designs that don't
create the problem that Henry had??

The bracket is available from:

Marvin Peck
8019 Colgate
Houston TX 77061
713-643-4442

I believe the cost is around $30(I called yesterday and got his
answering machine).

The "fix" was in Henry's post. Be sure you have enough room for the
heater control cable. Relocate if you must. AFAIK, there are only two
Powermaster's available. Powermaster 2 is the one you want as the later
Powermaster 3's price is higher by a factor of 4. According to the
rebuilder I spoke with, functionally they are the same.

If Justin or someone else that's using the powermaster would send me the
picture, I'll be glad to post it on my site. I'm planning to install
one, so eventually I'll have the entire process documented there.

BTW, I've been spending most of my spare time chasing parts and getting
elbow deep in grease, so I'm running behind on getting "tech" stuff
posted. I'll try to get some of the backlog cleared up this week.

They did not have them in stock, special order. they are remanufactured by
A-1 Cardone in Pennsylvannia(1-800-777-4780). I used the 1986 Chev caprice
estate wagon for the reference although all of the full size 1986 wagons
used them. Think the part # was 62-18052. Hope this helps.
