Tom,
Why did you decide not to use the Power Master? I am interested in the
Power Master if it improves all six brakes and not just the rear drums. Let
me know how much you need for the complete kit.
Thank,

I have decided not to use the powermaster setup on my coach and have a new
one for sale including the special adapter made my Mr. Peck. I will sell it
for what i paid for it. It was bought by thom Hole for me and has a
lifetime guarantee thru auto advantage I believe. If anyone is interested i
will dig out the paper work and figure out the price. If I remember
correctly it was about 1/2 as much as one purchased here in new york.

If you want to improve your stock dumb brakes, get a couple of sets of
CARBON METALLIC, that's right carbon metallic, brake shoes! Give
Buskirk-Rush a call and ask them they will know whwt you are asking for.

Tim,
My stock dumb brakes have carbon metallic pads on the front and large
diameter wheel cylinders on the rear plus the usual maintenance items. The
rear tandems will lock up on a panic stop below 5 mph. None of the wheels
will squall and smoke on a panic stop from higher speeds. I've had it
tested by experts and they work just like all the GMC's. That's not good
enough for me pulling a Toad. The larger front calipers may be my next step
but I'd like to hear all sides of the Power Master story as well. I hope
everyone keeps the info flowing.

Bob, have you considered a brake for the Toad?

David,
I got to look at Byron Maxwell's setup of his Tracker and he used a surge
brake that he said works well. I purchased the same thing and haven't had a
long enough trip to test it properly. I think it will be okay. I learned
to drive 55 years ago using mechanical brakes and my Dad said if I
anticipated things right I shouldn't need to rely on my brakes. That was
okay then but I'm spoiled now and I want to see them smoking and hear them
squalling in a panic stop. There's a lot more traffic to anticipate
nowadays.

Bob:
I guess I did not make myself clear. Yes, front carbon metallic brake pads
have been in use for some time and work very well, especially when heated
(used hard). What I was referring to is there is now available carbon
metallic brake shoes! ( brake pads are used with rotors: brake shoes are
used with drums ) Therefore my suggestion was to get Two sets of carbon
metallic brake shoes for the rear wheels to go with the front carbon
metallic brake pads. This would seem to me to be a more economical solution
to improve braking capability than to expend many more $ on converting to a
disc rear set up. Just a suggestion as there is no substitute for defensive
driving.

Tim,
I guess I had my head in the sand. I didn't know there were Carbon Metallic
Shoes as well. That's a much less intrusive mod to the rear brakes than
going all the way to discs. Thanks.

Who makes the carbon-metallic brake shoes for the GMC?
What are the part numbers and the cost?

The surge brake will do the trick but I am partial to the vacuum brake.
The only reason is I can back up with the vacuum brake as long as the
Toad's wheels are reasonably straight. The few occasions when the need to
back up a few feet has made me a vacuum brake supporter.

David,
I never thought of the backing problem. I assumed that with 4 wheels down I
wasn't skillful enough to back up anyway but 4 or 5 feet might be important.
I'll just rationalize and say I'm backing up to check my Toad brakes.
Thanks for the thoughts.

I have a utility trailer that has "surge brakes" and it has a locking pin
that you can use to disable the brakes. I use it when I'm backing up.
Of course you have to get out and set it, but if backing up a with a
toad is an occasional thing, what would be wrong with that?

Of course I don't know if that type of brake is available for use with
toads. I just assumed you could if for for pulling a car.
Richard Waters '76 PB etc.

IIRC...
you cant use the P-30 Master Cylinder w/powermaster unit and you need it if you have the 80mm calipers.(Especially on mid axle too??)

Correct me if I'm wrong...
