IF someone were to pry against the rolled edge of the reservoir on the power steering pump, despite multiple forum warnings not to pry against the
reservoir, and then there was a seeping leak that shows at the bottom of the pump...what got screwed up?

I found this link that describes some factors in finding a replacement
http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=296734&rid=3615&srch=power+steering+pump

I found this link that has great pictures of the internals
http://www.corvette-restoration.com/restoration/motor_and_transmission/060813_power_steering_pump_rebuild.htm

Is it simply that the reservoir twists against the pump and breaks the seal? Will a rebuild kit be enough to seal it back up?

And how are you supposed to lever the blasted thing to begin with. Book and forum say don't use reservoir but use stub behind pulley. I couldn't
figure out any combination of any screwdriver or lever that could grab the sloped chunk.

This seal kit is actually in stock near me:

Autozone (part #6053) and Advance (20-6883) say they can get a Toronado pump, but it will take a few days. First read of forum sounds like some
special trick to move current pulley to new pump, and pump outlets may be in the wrong place. Supposed to leave for spring break trip Sunday.
Thoughts, suggestions, and general calming advice is always appreciated.

Armand posted a picture of tensioning the PS pump using the "tab"

Gene, your link is for bogie greasers, I assume you meant to send me to something else?

Wally, thanks for that pic, I could not find it before I posted. Shoot, that sure is simple when you see it. I was trying to use the lump on the
casting that is mostly out of view from the pulley shaft in that picture.

So, now that I won't mess it up AGAIN, can I fix this one with a seal kit? or do they usually get messed up structurally?

And, I have read enough to get confused on the pulley removal/re-install that will have to happen for a rebuild or replace. Impact wrench, certain
kind of puller, certain pusher that threads into shaft, wha?

Pulley removal is accomplished using tool from Harbor Freight. Sometimes works better than the Snap-On on some vehicles. Was $9.99 on sale when I got
it. DO NOT use an impact wrench with the tool, I don't care who made it. Lube it and make your muscles burn. There is a trick to using it, balancing
the forces of 2 wrenches, you can figure it out.

The seal you violated is a big O-ring around the pump, and you probably dented or distorted the tank. You will have to remove the output fitting to
remove the reservoir/tank. Then your metalforming skills will be tested, making it round again at the seal. The O-ring is probably ok, but I would use
a new one from a kit even if that's the only thing I needed. Too much hassle trying to find one the right size unless you have an O-ring Guru in your
neighborhood.

When I redid my pump last year, I used the loan a tool program at autozone. It was free, the tool worked fine, and that was the end of it. There
is a specific puller just for power steering pulleys if I recall. I did not use an impact to free up the old pulley.
