Those of you who've noticed where we live and watch the national news
probably know that two policemen were murdered here yesterday morning. In
case you're wondering about us, here's the story:
About 9:45-9:50 yesterday morning a city policeman responded to a domestic
dispute call on S. Lee St, about 3.5 miles from us, a few hundred yards
from where my aunt lives at the Methodist retirement village. He was
joined by a GA Southwestern State University policeman, the campus
adjoining the apartment complex. They were life-long friends, roommates,
and each engaged to be married within a couple of months, so I hear.
Apparently, as soon as they accosted the perp, he shot each of them in the
head. The city policeman died before the soon-arriving rescue squad got
him to the hospital. The campus copy was air evac'd to Macon for several
hours of surgery. He died today. The 20 law enforcement agencies
eventually arriving, including helicopters, blanketed the area with no
luck. The announced reward went from $20,000, to $30k, to $50k, and
finally to $70k.
Before noon, a sherriff's deputy got a personal phone call from an
acquaintance to say that they'd just left their home, where the assassin
was now located. No word yet whether they were friends or relatives.
The swat team, and many others, immediately surrounded the house, which is
about a mile south of us -- some 2.5 miles, across town, from where the
killings occurred. After an hour or so of patient waiting, they heard one
gunshot from inside the house. After another wait, they sent a robot into
the house and found the perp dead. Good riddance. The best possible
outcome, except that the "friend" or relative will collect the $70,000.
I understand there are already murmurs that "If they hadn't come on so
strong with so many cops they might have been able to talk him out." and
"...just 'cause he's black...".
He reportedly had a rap sheet 31 pages long and was arrested a couple of
months ago for domestic violence at the same address. What I don't yet
know is why the responding, murdered, policemen were dispatched with no
warning as to the background.
That's the whole story as I know it. Sorry to go all non-GMC, but I
thought the nearness to a 3 GMCers was enough relativity. John Beaver
lives half a mile from me; and, the creep probably passed within a block of
Stick Miller during his escape.
