Mark,
If you can get 65 mph over a 7% grade, you don't need Carburetor or
distributor work. If you just want to use cheaper fuel, put on an engine
knock eliminator.

Great job on photo point Arch, I spent all morning looking at your GMC.

I've got an original '77 Kingsley with 32K miles and the 403. I would
like to redo the carb and have seen info on rejetting to run today's lousy
fuel. Can you-all tell me where to find this info and who sells a good
rebuild kit? And who has the best kit for recurving the distributor? Simple
(minded) questions from a DOB (dumb ole boy).

Also, I've not had my GMC run over 1/4 on the temp gauge, and I've never
heard the fan come on, not on start up or going up our 7% grade 3 mile long
hill with the AC on, ( at 65 mph). After all this talk I've been listening
for it, and to tell the truth I'm getting a little nervous. We used to do a
test in the '70s with a rubber paddle (piece 'o' tire). I'd hold the paddle
up to an idling engine's fan to test the clutch's resistance. With the
radiator blocked off, and the AC OFF, the engine's heat would engage the
clutch sooner or later. But I'm not going to do this in the confined space
of
this GMC. I hate to R&R stuff that might be good, but I'm taking no chances.

Mark,
A general rule of thumb use can use with fan clutches is that if you
don't hear it engage or have not heard in engage then it is probably not
working. If it is the original unit on your coach then it probably has
not work correctly in a long time.
As for your temperature gauge reading just over the 1/4 mark, if it is
the stock unit then your engine cooling temp is in the 225 to 235 deg f
range and if you reach the 3/8 mark then your Eng. temp would be
considered HOT. If you have installed the NAPA # TS 6469 sending unit
then at 1/4 mark your engine temp is aprox 180 degs f and and 215 deg f
at 1/2. This unit has been installed by large numbers of GMC owner and
it gives a more accurate indication of you engines cooling temperature.
Cinnabar Newsletter #6 December 1995 has the complete details. If you
would like the temperature charts for those 2 senders, E-mail privately
and I will scan and send you the charts.

Mark,
Are you going up that 7 % grade or down it?
