Do you mean the aluminum plate with the circular black foam
rubber thing ? Does it play an important part in the overall scheme
of things ?

I believe the black foam rubber thing is a "vent" for allowing the gases to
escape. Mine is flush with the vents in the generator door. And the
aluminum plate gives me something to polish besides the Alcoas.

I took mine off a long time ago after I got the removable drawer to
check the batteries. Osburn said it didn't add anything.

I haven't seen my inner door since 1977 when I removed it to replace the
battery and lost it. I always wondered what it was for??

I have come to the same conclusion dave! Not there so we will ask each other
if we have an extra one. seems like no one has even one.

My 77 has one. It's not really a door, but an aluminum access panel
attached by 4 bolts. It has a hole in the face, with a foam rubber tube
attached, probably for venting battery gases. The tube is flush with the
vent holes on the generator access door.

I made one for my battery compartment on our '76 Eleganza. I used a
piece of sheet aluminum. I cut one corner, drilled the proper holes &
then bent into a z-shape. I cut about 8" off the Onan side of the
compartment side so I could fit a larger battery into that compartment.
The new cover has a longer leg to cover the piece I cut off. I drilled
the two holes where the cover bolts to the body, but the end which is
next to the Onan just stays in place due to the spring action of the
longer z-leg.

It is actually a cover for the battery compartment (next to the generator)
