Onan Overheating

My 6KW Onan had a tendancy to overheat and shut down
when using the generator for long periods of time (even
with air moving by it like when driving on the highway with
the roof air on)
>
The Onan also used a lot of oil when running hot (so far doesn't
appear to use any oil when running cooler)
>
I bought a small electric fan from the auto wreckers (from in
front of the radiator on a Hyundi mini van with air conditioning
since it had the most compact unit I could find) for $10.00 and
mounted it on the inside of the GMC flip up generator door to
draw air through the ventilation slots.
>
Wired in a relay (used terminal 6 on the control board for trigger
voltage to the relay with fan power coming from the Onan battery)
so that whenever the generator is running so is the fan.
>
The generator runs much cooler now. Although I have not worked
it really hard since I added the fan.

With just the stock Onan cooling fan has anyone else experiencing
Onan overheating? Has anyone found any service problems to
cause overheating on the Onan i.e. mixture too lean?
