Afraid you'll have to ask an Onan engineer, I've owned 2 different models
of Onan gensets and both manuals state, use SAE-30 Non-detergent only.

I stand corrected, my Onan manual stated SAE-30

But after checking the site http://www.onanrv.com/faq/index.html

FAQ they state this...

Q
Should I use straight 30-weight oil or is the multi-viscosity oil I use
in my
vehicle okay?
A
For best GenSet performance, Onan recommends you use OnaMax, the oil
Onan specifically formulated for RV GenSet. However, you can use the same
oil you use in your vehicle engine provided it meets or exceeds SG/CE API
specifications. To get you off to a good start, all new Onan GenSets are
factory
prepared with OnaMax 15W40 oil.

The manual that came with the ONAN specs SAE 30-API/SF for normal use
and use multi-grade oil, only if you expect a wide range of operating
conditions, cold-hot ETC: However use of multi-grade may result in higher
rate of oil consumption.
however. on the Tag that came wired to the oil filer cap. on the ONAN itself
recommends SAE-30 Non-detergent.

so what do we do ? my Onan is a Emerald 4. BGE

John,
DAYP(Do as you please). There are a lot of people using synthetic oil in
their Onan. I've used 20-50 for 800 hours and the Onan is working better
than ever. The only bad oil nowadays is no oil.
