Onan Oil Filter

Finally got a chance to start working on the new to me GMC. Decided to start with the Onan and service it up and see if it will produce electricity.
It only has 317 hours on the meter. I picked up a gallon of Rotella 15-40 and went to NAPA and gave them the WIX number ( WIX 51762 ) I gleaned from
previous postings on this board. I got a NAPA Gold 1516. It was a "little" longer than I might like. It fit ok and the onan will slide in but it rubs
on the way in. A better NAPA number I think is NAPA Gold 1374. Do others here use the NAPA Gold oil filters. I have been using them in other
applications and the warehouse is close to where I work on the GMC. Any input is appreciated. I will try to start the Onan tomorrow and see if it
will start and produce electricity. I am going to supply the gas from an alternate source to be sure the fuel is fresh and available to the onan.
Any tips or observations as I proceed will help keep me on track

THANKS

I use Cummins/Onan 122-0800. No guesswork required.

A quick search shows the Cummins-Onan part selling from 8.92 to 24.95. Pay attention to where you buy it. All searched were genuine Onan parts, with
pictures.

I have accounts a both Cummins and NAPA and they are both close so that makes it easy the next time I need to do this. The coil was bad so I just
ordered one from JimK. As a secondary question how often do you service your generators. I typically service my generator in the bus annually
regardless of hours to prevent condensation from getting ahead of me. I was planning on the same for the GMC but didn't know if the gas engine
requires more attention.

Thank You for the responses

Wix makes Napa filters. Drop the first 5 and you have the Napa number.
Wiz 51762 = Napa 1762

I installed a NAPA 1516 Gold filter on my 6K onan and it fit and the unit slides in BUT it rubs the top of the filter. The filter I took out was a
NAPA Gold 1374 and like you mentioned it is recessed so it is not easy to remove. Following this thread it seems that the WIX 51762 would be a NAPA
1762 Gold. The MGL 51516 must have been the number that got me the 1516 at NAPA.

Any way you figure the long filter number that I have is NAPA 1516 Gold. The short number that I have is NAPA 1374 Gold.

Just remember that the 1516 rubs as the tray slides in.

> The filter I took out was a NAPA Gold 1374 and like you mentioned it is recessed

For those of you experimenting with different size oil filters…especially smaller or recessed ones - please keep in mind that our air-cooled Onans have a pull-through cooling system (trade name “Onan Vacuflo”) as contrasted with more traditional push-through cooling systems. All of the openings between the generator and the engine as well as the oil filter opening must have sealing shims or grommets which eliminate suction leakage at those locations. The oil filter grommet is particularly critical to sealing its opening since that is the location closest to the vacuum source - the flywheel - and any leakage at that point will seriously compromise cooling effectiveness for the entire remainder of the engine and generator.
