No Tom your'e missing it again. The Oldsmobile V-8 was designed for a rope
seal , as was the Pontiac V-8. The finish on the crank as well as the area
on the crank was designed for a rope type seal. If the rope is installed
correctly it will work fine. With modern production the time and handwork
involved with a rope seal is prohibitive, that is the main reason for not
using it. BTW there is the addition of more drag but it's miniscule at most
real world engine speeds, sorta like crankshaft wipers.
If one is to retrofit an old engine, with many miles on it, and perhaps wear
at the seal area I think it's a mistake to just add a neoprene seal.
Unfortunately you cannot tell if the seal will leak unless the engine is
reinstalled and run. On a GMC particularly thats a real problem I would
hate for someone to experience. That was the reason for my post and example
of my prior experience with a neoprene seal retrofit.
Tom it's a nonsequitur that one would not use the correct sealant.
BTW Tom I hope you found your brake part. Did you try my suggestion of
just ordering it from NAPA since the catalog pictures are often wrong ?
