You write below about the oil and turbulance in the valve covers. This
is exactly why Mondello recommends oil restrictors in the bottom end as
well as line boering.

At 65 and up the oil is pumped out of the sump and into the valve cove
area (exactly where it is not needed) this of course, if you were to
slow down, is where the lowere bearing go. At least that is or was
explained to me and quite possibly determined to be my problem. I now
have it oil restrictor and al the other tricks required to keep a 455
alive for a long timel. Thanks Chuck

Could you explain further?

Arch,
Those valve covers have baffle plate bosses alongside the breather &
oil filler openings on the underside of the top of the valve covers.
There's a sheet metal baffle that should be mounted slightly below the
opening, 1/4" or so that prevents the oil mist from being sucked into
the carb, also keeps the same from happening to the air cleaner during
the reversion process. Gotta have these, especially with the amount of
oil that accumulates in the valve covers on these motors. Cheap
safeguard.
