So, my new external oil cooler popped, luckily, 5min from our destination. I believe air got trapped in the system.

I’m replacing the whole system with the good stuff. I’ve got a Hayden 779 and had new -10AN 5/8 hose (true 1/2” I.d.) hoses made up.

Concerned with over cooling, I’ve also purchased a Hayden 211 sandwich adapter but the o-ring seal is 3-1/2” and I’m pretty sure our stock one is only 3”.

Has anyone installed a new aftermarket sandwich adapter on our coaches before? Any thoughts on making this work or am I overdoing it since we have the pressure bypass?

Well, the stock oil pump is indeed 3”, while the Hayden thermostatic sandwich adapter is 3-1/2”. I’ll need to have an adapter plate made when I get home. Overcooling shouldn’t be too much of an issue given we are running through Appalachia on summer days right nowIMG_5199.webp

That adapter was used by other vehicles, I'm pretty sure the S10 used the same one. Look on ebay

About 10yrs ago I bought a Thermostatic Sandwich Oil Filter Adapter. It has a bimetallic spring in it that is designed to fit between the filter and the engine block. When the oil temperature reaches 160 degrees, the oil filter adapter starts to release oil to the engine oil cooler, and it releases all oil to the cooler when the temperature reaches 180 degrees or higher. I do not have a temp gauge on the engine oil, but I know it is working. Traveling on the highway I note the oil pressure slowly settles out at 42lbs. Then if I happen to be looking at the gauge at the right moment, I can see the oil pressure increase to 44-45lbs. Then over time slowly go back to 42lbs, and start that recurring process over again. IIRC I got that sandwich adaptor from Summit. The only problem I have had with it is that I had to order special replacement "O" rings for Oring between the Adapter and the spot where the oil filter screws to the block. Just my experience.

Thank you for sharing. Is your original oil filter base with the 5.3-6.3PSI bypass still in place?
