Well---Massive vacuum leak was the clue. I didn't realize the sound I
was hearing was vacuum, not having heard the throttle body run before.
When all else fails--READ INSTRUCTIONS. Page 2 INSTALLATION OF TBI
paragraph 1, "Follow the instructions in the adapter kit to plug the
unused TBI hold down bolt holes."
When OSBURNS installed for me they apparently missed that step. RTV
drying as I hunt and peck on these keys. Will fire her up tomorrow and
see. That bolt hole was in the channel that fed #2 and #3 cylinder. As
you may recall, those are the cylinders that would not cancel out.
