Since it is supposed to rain this weekend
I thought I would stay home and do the
permanent work on the gauge side of the dash.
Almost everything makes sense. Fortunately
the P.O. didn't do much with the wires and what
he did do is obvious.
Standard kinds of problems.
Fibre optics damaged presenting a problem,
but one that I can understand and maybe even fix.
Burn't out park brake warning lite. I remember
something about Audi's (some other foreign car?)
using the same bulb, shouldn't be impossible
to get so I can fix.
P.O. replaced radio with stereo. Nothing I can't
cut out to replace with my opinion of the right
stereo (even if my choice of stereo is wrong
at least the wires will be soldered and heat
shrinked.)
Air warning buzzer gone. The silence sounds
good to me. The air warning light is loud enough
to warn me.
Signal lites work regardless of ignition key
position. Odd, but given that there is only 1 flasher
this might be normal?
Everything else seems to work fine. Dash lites.
High beam indicator etc.
Now the problem.
How come I have what looks to be a fancy bulb
socket hanging loose with no place to install it?
It is obviously factory.
The wires come out of the factory harness on
the headlight switch corner of the dash.
4 wires leading to a connector. red, green,
white and black about 18 gauge. From the
connector again 4 wires. Same colour but
lighter gauge, maybe 22 gauge about 6 inches
long ending at the bulb socket.
The only place this bulb socket seems to fit
is in the hole in the upper part of the dash
between the large gauge openings, however
there is no opening (or lens cover) in the plastic
trim piece (covers up the metal dash) to let the
bulb stick out.
The harness does not appear to be long
enough to go to where the factory radio
would have been and not much else of the
factory stuff has been monkeyed with.
The bulb is the small push in type (same as
used on the side marker lites) but the socket
is weird. Black. About 1 inch diameter. On the
back side of which is an exposed circuit board.
No components showing on the back side.
I tried to open the socket but was unable to do
so within the limits of the force I wanted to use.
Made sure the bulb was good and flipped
all the switches and tried everything to try to
get it to light.
Checked the wiring diagrams in the manual
but can find nothing fitting this description.
Haven't hit the wires yet with a meter to see if
any other switching or conditions cause
electricity to flow.
Since everything electric in the coach seems
to work I could ignore it.
That wouldn't be like me. Why worry about
something important when something seemingly
so unimportant is out there waiting to be discovered.
Therefore I thought it was time to ask those
that have been before me.
Mine is an early 73.
Anybody else got one of these?
Was there something that GM was thinking
about doing that had not been implemented
at the time my coach was built?
Why does it not show up in the maintenance
manual?
What does it do?
Inquiring minds would like to know.
