Multi-point fuel injection

Well there does not seem to be a lot of talk on this list. I am new to the
GMC
just bought one 2 months ago. Please understand she is in sad shape. I will
retire in 2 years so I am starting now to build my retirement home. I have
been
on the road in a RV for vacations and work for the last 25 years. I presently

have a newer motorhome but have always been in love with the GMC since
they came out. I teach Industrial Design and I know what I like. I have
restored
3 RVs before so I do have an idea of what I am in for. If no one is going to
talk,
so I can learn, about this lady then I will have to ask a lot of questions to
learn.
Here goes. I have a 76 Glenbrook, 128,000 miles on her. 12,000 miles on an
engine and trans rebuild.

1. In order to get the best mileage I want to put in a multi-point fuel
injection
system.I have found several systems does any one have any experience
with this?

2. I also want to put in a 3 inch exhaust system, any comments?

3. All window rubber and tracks need to be replaced. Any body done this?

4. Headliner needs to be replaced. Any body done this?

I will quit at this point but believe me I will be back. I hope I dont become
a bore but I need help.Yes I have been to Cinnabar, cant afford that. Have
purchased some goodies from them. Have talked to other suppliers. Just want
some honest answers.

i'm probably not going to be much help here, but since the activity has
been so sparse on the list, i'll add as much as i know.

i haven't done this, but i have seen some work that someone did on their
coach. they used the plasitic sheeting that i have seen used to line
bathroom walls in public buildings. they took the old headliner and backing
down and used the backing as a template for cutting the plastic. sounded
fairly simple and it looked good.

OEM systems that come close to your engine size and setup will be the
cheapest and most reliable. OEM systems also have a "learning
capability" that adjusts for slight variations between vehicles. Take
the entire FI system, injectors, sensors, wire harness and ECM from a
454 big block chevy. This should come close to the needs of the 455
olds motor. Pick an earlier year that still used a distributor to fire
the ignition. Later DIS systems will require you to hook-up additional
crankshaft and camshaft position sensors.

There are companies on the web that offer OEM hardware conversion kits
that will save you a lot of reseach and trial/error time. The
aftermarket FI systems provide more tuning flexability, but cost more
and in some cases are less reliable. You usually can't beat factory
hardware for reliability.

Multi-port is better, but you will need to drill the olds intake
manifold for the injector ports. Not an impossible task. A single point
throttle body system would be easier to install and still provide
improved fuel metering over the existing carb system. Both systems were
probably offered on Chevy 454s.

There is a mailing list devoted specifically to DIY fuel injection
issues. You can ask specific questions here, but don't expect someone
to take the time to provided you with the complete solution in one

Larger diameter tubing might be better it it does not drop the exhaust
gas flow speed. High gas speed provides better scavenging of the
exhaust gasses. High performance motors need larger tubing due to
increased rpm and gas flow capability. It's not so much backpressure
that is important, but good gas flow speed. If the tubing is too large,
low rpm performance will be hurt, but higher rpm performance will be
increased. For a low RPM motorhome, larger tubing may not be
neccessary.

I have a 1973 GMC motorhome that I'm in the process of rebuilding. I
rebuilt two of the large
sliding windows this summer. It was a time consuming job. The most
difficult part was removing the old machine screws holding the windows
in (I ended up removing them with a cold chisel). I was able to replace
the track with new track from Cinnabar but they didn't have any new
rubber gaskets for the window glass. I reused the old ones after
soaking them in silicon. If anyone knows a supplier for the window
rubber I'd be interested.

Mine were all replaced at Golby's in Orlando. 407-859-9000

I got a Steel Rubber products catalog but didn't see anything in it that
would work.
I think I'll give them a ring. Thanks for the idea.
