I entered the Hunter Liggett Military Base out of Paso Robles Ca 3 days ago.
Vehicle reg and insurance needs to be current. Drivers license and after Oct
10, the correct ID current. SS number required as well as fingerprints. And
they disappear with your ID and come back after about 5 minutes. So they are
vigilant.

I also stayed in the remote RV parking just off base. Cheap and no nothing
there. Deserted and spooky. By the way, Mission San Antonio de Padua was
well worth the trip off the highway 101.

Hunter Liggett is a great place to see wildflowers in the Spring because it isn't grazed by cattle. Same difficulty getting on the base, seems like
overkill to me considering what's there. Some restrictions as where you can go because of manuevers. You can make reservations at the Hacienda which
was built by Hearst and designed by Julia Morgan. My group has done it for years. The Hacienda formerly offered dinners, but not the last time I was
there. As I recall they have junk food out for breakfast. Drive out to "The Indians" for some good hikes.

Neither the Anniston Army Depot nor Redstone Arsenal are that vigilant. Looked at my retired ID, offered directions to the RV park, and that was it.
Some years back, they quit asking senior noncoms and field grade officers for proof of insurance - they may have gone back to asking. The host at
DeSoto in Anniston was very nice about the spilled oil. Given Anniston's mission of destroying all that nerve gas, I was surprised they didn't look
further when I appeared.

Uh, Dean, did you show DoD identification, or that was going in as a civilian?

Hey Dean,
If you get bored at your camp ground, head south towards Lompoc and go to Jalama beach campground. Good surf!! And best of all, Jacko's steak house in
Nipomo.
Enjoy!! Scott.

I am not a veteran (too old for Vietnam and too young for Korea) so I showed
my Ca Driver's license, which will not be good after the 10th of this month
as I do not have the new ID one. My passport will work tho. We went on Base
to visit the Hacienda, William Hearst's previous Ranch Headquarters before
the Army took it from him in 1939-1940. They have not maintained it as such
and not really anything to see or tour, IMHO. Then we went to the Mission
stayed until it closed and spent the night in the Army's remote RV park
watching the ground squirrels .

As it was still in the 90's during the day, we popped over the hill to the
Scarecrow Festival in Cambria, then to the Morro Bay Dunes RV park for the
night.

Yes, Jocko's in Nipoma is good, but lot's of great places to visit locally
to Paso Robles. I was scouting the Mission site for a 49er's Rally spot.
Not sure if it works that well. Let's talk about it Jack. I'd go back with
you or two.

The entrance to Hunter Liggett is also barricaded by concrete stanchions and
you have to weave your way through. A great deal of overkill at that Base,
anyway.
