Don Swagman, you asked for input regarding the KATT reservoir
arrangement for towing a car with an automatic transmission with all 4
wheels down.

I've read about several vehicles and talked to two owners, where the
KATT (or similar) kits worked out fine - the owners reported no
problems, and had many thousand miles on each car.

On the other hand, I talked to one owner that lost a transmission in
less than 500 miles; he had had the kit "professionally" installed,
and according to everyone involved (remember the owner's doing the
talking! ) it was done correctly. That didn't save him from having
to buy a new transmission, however...Also, the magazines (particularly
MotorHome) have run the occasional letters of owners with similar
problems.

We have a Remco Lube Pump on our '94 Olds Silhouette van (3.8L V-6,
4-speed GM 4T60E transmission), and it has been a great unit. I have
no interest in Remco, BTW - but we've towed the van almost 30,000
miles, and have had absolutely no problems whatever.

Please note that we weren't towing behind a GMC - our last big coach
was a '95 38' Safari Continental with the 8.3L, 300 HP Cummins and
Allison 6-speed! When we decided to trade it in (a long story having
to do with very poor assembly quality), we decided that both of us
wanted the coach we had been admiring since 1973!!

Good luck -

Don,

I agree with Bill about the KATT system. It works by over filling
the transmission to the level of the rotating components. The resulting
windage will supposedly splash lubricate the transmission. **No fluid
is pumped through any of the lube circuits of the transmission to keep
the bushings wet.** Some transmission designs are able to withstand
that kind of abuse. Some are not. It's a crap shoot.

Another thing that happens is that a significant heat buildup will
occur even though the car is being towed. With the lube pump system,
the transmission fluid is being pumped through the transmission and
cooler in the normal manner.

The KATT system consists of only a 2 qt tank and a shut off valve.
It's inexpensive. The lube pump system is more expensive, but to quote
the famous line from the Fram oil filter commercial, "You can pay me now
or pay me later."
