K&N / Edelbrock Air Filter?

Hi All,



It looks like the correct K&N washable/reusable air filter in part
number E-1650. They seem to run around $60. The specs are 14"OD and
3.063" high.



I ran across the Edelbrock 43666 (red) / 43667 (blue) / 43668 (black)
which run about $17 and have the same specs.



Has anyone tried these out? Killer price for a cotton gauze filter. I
bought one as an experiment. (Worst case is I can use it in my old
Edelbrock 14" air cleaner.)

Had a k&n replacement in mine to replace the stock one . I got a report back from black stone that suggested my oil sample had dirt in it and I may
have a problem with my air filter. I then removed it and put in a new stock one. The next oil sample didn't have dirt in it. No more k&n for me.

Roy,
We are also big into Industrial air a liquid filters , The K&N filter will
flow lot of are with minimal restriction ,so at the drag strip we love
them. However like you found out, the particular matter cannot be stopped
very well with the Viscus Impingment that the oiled cotton tries to do.
That principle of filtration is frowned on by all the diesel manufactures.
The particular matter will wear your engine so that the oil consumption
will increase but you'll like the added economy and power.

What about other filters that are made of "synthetic" materials? We currently have one under the Spectre brand because we had to go with a lower
profile housing. We are using this one:

It doesn't say it's straight cotton but says "synthetic". Is this something to be concerned with??

From what Little I know about that type and brand, I feel it is lot better
than the K&N. Just follow the instruction on the washing of the media.

Edelbrock lists the following description on their web site. They call
it a 'poly synthetic media', and state that it isn't cotton. It's also
the dry filter type that does not need to be oiled. (I have a similar
dry-filter on my SRT Magnum and it keeps the throttle body and intake
spotless.)

I'll try and post a video review of what it looks like when it comes in.
Sorry I won't be able to do a long-term test yet. My coach's oil is 10
years old at present. (Working on that).

It would be an interesting experiment to use a K+N as a pre filter to a paper filter and
see how much "passed by".

If I could be convinced to use a K+N I would perform an oil analysis and watch the Si (silicon)
level like a hawk.

When we use to race, we used sometimes metal filters coated with oil.
Without filters the air around the carb would not get pulled in in a semi
Laminar fashion and made a difference.
So we made it a rule to change oil after racing to cut down on wear from
the abrasive particulates.
Oil filters filter only 25% as the engine RPM is high and the pressure at
the filter is high enough for the bypass to open majority of the time.
Racing filters had lower restriction, but it did not filter smaller
particulets.
