I'm going to jump in here, even if I am going to get stomped on.

I find it highly unethical to take a product that has taken research and
dollars on the part of the 'inventor', copy it and then attempt to keep the
original inventor from reaping his/her meager yet just rewards.

I know it gets done every day in industry but that doesn't mean I have to
condone or support it.

With efforts like this the Leigh Harrisons and Paul Bennetts will quicky
disappear or at the very least be very reluctant to continue their efforts
in the community... and then where will we be.

It's quite alright to buy bulk and negotiate a better price, but to
blatently plagarize is simply not nice.

Same goes for bypassing a conciencious middleman that finds a product, and
then entices/encourages the manufacturer to build it in volumes that not
many manufactures will even consider. Even if Paul made the 100% markup of
the AutoZones, etc. his price for the hitch is more than reasonable and 40
bucks for a jackpad is really not bad. I mean really... that's just reaping
in the profits from the many thousands he and Leigh may have sold at MB.

Just my 2 cents
I'll try not to trip as I get off the soap box :-)

"Live and let live" is a motto that I will try to continue to live up to.

My sentiments exactly. I'm putting a check in the mail for a jack pad from
Leigh.

Lanier:

Both Paul Bennett, 803-799-4323 and Don Roberts, 734-847-8515 sell the
lifters.

Sorry everyone. I intended to send my previous message privately to JR to
avoid clogging up the list, but I forgot to change the To: address away
from the GMCnet before I hit send.

My apologies,
Zak

Now you have me curious :-)

I'm a relative newcomer in the overall, having been doing my GMC thing as a
loner for so many years, so a lot of the folks are new to me as are the
'goodies' available.

Is Don Roberts still actively selling them?

I would always favor an original unless a copy has been drastically improved
which makes calling it a copy debatable or the original designer has no
longer an active interest and someone else picked up the baton.

Unfortunately the consumer (me) does not always know where an item actually
originated when first time seen it is presented by this person or that
person.

And all this is patent/copyright, etc aside... it's just what's right is
right. One doesn't always succeed, but gotta keep striving for it :-)

Cheers

Heinz

I'm going to jump in one more time JR and then I too will leave it alone.

Had your post included the above information it would have received a
totally different reception, at least by me.

The above implies that what is out there is not perfect and not for all. I
had actually been wondering about that very point, i.e. how short does the
jack have to be to fit and will it then have enough travel as the short
jacks usually don't go high enough (that's why I carry 2)

- ------------------------
Allow me to quote from the original:
I gave them to my metal fabricator
here in town and asked what it would cost to duplicate them. Will find out
in the near future and let you know. I expect the cost to be much less than
the going rate.
- --------------------------

In my book there is a BIG difference between "copy" and "improve".

When improvements are rquired to make it work it implies that the original
designer didn't put enough thought into it and therfore does not qualify to
reap rewards. That's equally cut and dried in my book.

I apoligize for jumping on the soapbox without all the info.... but I
thought you had given it all :-)

Just as we need original designers we sometimes need those designs
perfected.... and by others (I.e. folks like yourself) if need be.

It really is just true knock-offs that I have a problem with.

Sorry Heinz but I think you're headed to wrong way on this one. Leigh and
Paul have developed an alternative to the original GMC jack that I'm sure
had lots of 'research and dollars' put into it. If now someone else wants
to cintinue this process by improving cost/function/availability then why
would that be different. Heck, if GMC didn't improve on the 'motorhome'
idea that some others had befor 1973, where would you and I be now??

Again... I have no problem whatsoever with "Improve", only with "copy".

Case in point, I have no problem if someone takes our software and builds
his own with ours as guideline and makes improvements... but I certainly do
get ticked off if it's just copied and sold or given away.
