Hi J.R. heard he was recommending this cam, but I have a real problem with
this kind of recommendation. First the recomnmendation of installing it 4
degrees advanced. the reason for this is to compensate for timing chain
stretch as the chain seats and wears in. 4 degrees is to much for a cloyes
true roller chain and gears. 1 or 2 dgrees advanced is plenty. Dick
Patterson knows what he is doing and has a lot of experience in racing. It
is not a complete recommendation and is only part of the story. you can't
just put a cam in an olds engine and expect it to work very well there are a
lot of other things you need to do. You need to first know how the cam was
ground, either lobe center of lobe separation method. If you dont know you
cannot properly degree the cam. Lets compare this to one of Mondellos RV
towing cams he recommends, the JM14-100, it costs $129.00. The specs on this
cam are at first glance identical since they both have the same duration.
But are they really. Depends on how they are ground, :
Itake lift: .432"
exhaust lift: .455"
intake duration @.050" lift: 204degrees
Exhaust duration @.050 lift: 212 degrees
Lobe separation: 112 degrees
lifters used: HL-232
Spring kit shallow: SK-245-S
Spring kit deep: SK-245D
Timing Chain set: TR-250 or TS-455
Rocker arm kit: SAR,ARK or stock
Spring pressure @seat: 80-125#
Spring pressure open" 250-320#
Bottom line is you cant just get a cam and stick it in and expect it to work
good.
When I rebuild my engine I am going to use Mondellos JM-16-18 cam
specifically cut for the GMC motorhome. This baby produces a lot of low end
torque and power.
