Thanks to Paul, I hooked up with Woodwards Garage in Kalamazoo where
several other GMCs are kept running. They diagnosed the problem as a
bad alternator belt and a bad ground strap on the starter. Did it fast
and reasonable. I would have gone back to get it but my wife had knee
surgery this week.
As a veteran auto restorer with over 10 partial and full restorations
under my belt from Austin Healey 100-6 to the Honda CRX-Si in my
driveway now (along with the TR-6, 1977 Bayliner, etc.) I am embarassed
that it was that simple. I guess if I had not been that tired, raining
and on the side of I-94, my GM engineer brother and I would have figured
it out eventually.
As for Richard Waters and his remarks about I-94. My brother lives in
Troy, MI and I will be traveling there on Thursday to visit prior to my
run back East. We will see if the roads of Troy are any more forgiving
to GMCs than I-94.
See you on the road.
