Why is it above the hatch... Is the carb etc higher... don't understand

Arch are you using the standard GMC air cleaner?

You're up against what I had to do Arch.
It's not the EFI that caused the raised top (in my case) but the use of the
Alu intake :-)

I think I have some pics spread around my website. I'm still not totally
happy with my hatch. I'm hoping that Darren might have a better solution for
me in the future re a raised hatch cover.

Pictures 1 & 2 show some sort of adapter on the intake end of the snorkel.
Is that stock? It looks like it would accept about a 4" hose. Does it
connect with an intake scoop in the grill?

Ragusa makes a cast aluminum air scoop that fits between the grill openings.
It accepts a dryer vent hose on the back side. I installed mine below the
bumper, and have the snorkel stuck in the other end. Not a good air-tight
fitting - would like to find an adapter like you have!

My 1976 Eleganza-II has the same setup, with the fitting for a hose. I was
always wondering if some bonehead took of the remote air intake, but from the
sound of it, this must have been a stock GMC 'It's in the parts bin, so lets
use it' kind of deal.

My 1976 Royale also has the same setup, so same problems plus a
different problem. I recently installed MT/Holly cast aluminum valve
covers purchased from Jegs. I had no choice, the old right side was
cracked and leaking. I had to file down the outside "ridge" of the right
side cover in order to clear the AC compressor bracket, but no real
problem. The problem is on the original valve covers the vent holes are
in the center but on the M/T valve cover they are offset to left side
which, on the right side, puts it directly deneath the air breather
snorkel. Any suggestions?

Also, the pictures indicate 2.5+inches of clearance above the air filter
cover while mine has approximately 0" clearance, I cannot just lift the
back of the engine cover and slide it back to remove it, it touches the
wingnut/bolt on the air filter cover.

This is also an exact match to the cleaner in my 1976 Eleganza-II w/455.
