Before you get to carried away with monitoring the amount of advance that
you have, it would be wise to verify that your Harmonic Balancer has not
slipped it's Outer Ring & is providing a false reading. You will be
surprised how many outer rings have slipped & people are Fat, Dumb &
Happy, but their coach want function well. The Maintenance manual
identifies how to verify the Outer ring setting.

PS: When I rebuilt my 455 (thats about 40 k miles ago of trouble free
operation), it got a new Harmonic Balancer...most rebuild shops just use
the old one.

Thanks, Duane. When I found out that it ran so well with all that
advance, the first thing I did was to check the timing mark on the
harmonic balancer. Since I had a Jasper engine installed by Buskirk
last July I did not know if the mark was good or not but I determined
that it was right on.
