There is an old trick used by many Chevy mechanics to solve the hot start
problem on GM starters. Put a Ford starter selonoid in series with the GMC
start solenoid circuit to supply 12V from the battery directly to the GMC
start circuit ( the small wire from the ignition switch) The Gen Motors
solenoids require about 10V to pull in solid and make the battery
connection. When hot, the increased resistance in the GM solenoid along
with voltage drops in the key circuit can reduce this voltage resulting in a
less than solid pull in of the GM starter solinoid. The Ford unit will pull
in at as low as three volts thereby assuring 12 volts at the GM solenoid.
Any '6o-'70s brown Ford unit should work. It works for me.
