Bob,
I enjoyed reading your post to the digest this morning. It sounds like =
you've
just done what I'm starting out to do... mechanical and interior =
improvements
to an old GMC. Mine's a '78 Kingsley; not a bad basic platform, but in =
need
of LOTS of work to make it a vehicle we can be proud of and to depend on =
for
trouble-free travelling.
Several of the things you've done are of interest to me. For starters, =
would
you mind telling me what you used for (1) your new converter; (2) your =
new
sink and faucet; and (3) your 2-burner cooktop and microwave?
Thanks, and best of luck on your forthcoming "first trip".
Glenn
I put in a magnateck 55 amp converter (bought from camping world with a =
president's club discount plus a $15 off coupon). I've heard good and =
bad about the magnatek and the jury is still out from my standpoint. I =
bought a small metal single bowl sink for about $20 from camping world =
on sale. I really don't plan on doing many dishes (paper plates and =
bowls) and I thought the counter space was more important. I put in a =
European style white faucet, one that the sprayer is part of the regular =
faucet neck. I bought the cheapest one I could find, $79 at Hugh M =
Woods (Payless Cashways) on sale. It looks good, fits real well but =
there doesn't seem to be enough pressure to keep the spray on by itself =
when running off the water pump. =20
By the way, I made my own counter top out of 3/4" MDF and covered it =
with a flexible laminate and put a wood bevel front on it. I put in a =
completely flat countertop, not a two level deal like the original. No =
problems except I have the old style plastic window trim that extends 2" =
from the window and I had to trim the bottom pieces to clear the =
countertop.
I took out the original oven (which looked like it was never used) and =
put in a two burner cooktop from JC Whitney - it was the only one I =
could find at a reasonable price - about $85 plus shipping. I used oven =
space to install my regular Panasonic 1 cubic foot 1000 watt microwave =
from my home kitchen and made it removeable. I just cut a sheet of 1/4" =
masonite the size of the microwave and dirlled 4 1/2" holes where the 4 =
rubber tipped feet of the microwave are. I put the microwave in and the =
holes keep it from moving side to side or front to back and a bungee =
strap on top keeps it from moving up and down. It's easily removeable =
and fits perfectly in the space. With the smaller sink and 2 burner =
cooktop (placed sideways so the controls are to the left), I have about =
3 feet of unobstructed counter space. I also ran a 12 volt cigarette =
type outlet using the 12 volt leads for the old oven and put an outlet =
on the left cabinet vertical side so we can use a 12 volt coffeemaker =
when not hooked up.
What helped me most is last September I went to a GMC Western States =
Rally at Bryce Canyon (without my not ready to travel coach) and talked =
to many GMCers and looked at a ton of coached to get ideas. I don't =
know if I did things the best way but I will share with you anything I =
learned.
